DUSTBIN lorries could be 'run on water' in an attempt to reduce exhaust emissions in the borough and save money.

Barnsley Council, working with Bulgarian company Water Fuel Engineering and Barnsley College, is trialling hydrogen technology on three vehicles from its fleet of 480 vans, trucks and bin wagons.

The technology uses water to create hybrid engines and cut down on fuel consumption.

Results of the pilot scheme will be monitored for the next few months to gauge whether the project is worth pursuing.
