A COUPLE who sustained life-changing injuries after a horrifying rollercoaster accident that made national news are now organising a fundraising night to mark ten years since the event.
Leah Washington-Pugh and her husband Joe Pugh were in the front seats of the former Alton Towers ride The Smiler when it smashed into a stationary carriage in June 2015.
The traumatic ordeal left both injured, with Leah having her leg amputated above the knee following the accident and Joe suffering smashed kneecaps.
In 2015 the couple organised a charity event which raised around £22,000 and they are hoping to replicate the success on the tenth anniversary of the accident, as they raise funds for the Yorkshire and Midlands Air Ambulances and LimbBo Foundation, a local charity which supports limb-different children.
The black tie event will take place on June 7 at the Metrodome, though the pair are working hard in advance to bring everything together.
Joe told the Chronicle: “We’re doing it to mark ten years since our accident.
“The last one we did raised a lot of money and now we’re wanting to do that again, or hopefully raise a little bit more.
“It’s a local event and we’re trying to keep it all local.”
