A police investigation is underway after a man covered in soot and blood was found laid on the ground outside a Worsbrough Common house that was engulfed in flames.

 

Mystery surrounds what happened at the property on Bank Street, but neighbours said they believed the man had tried to kill himself.

 

CID officers are now investigating the cause of Wednesday afternoon's fire and the circumstances surrounding it, but a source said the man found outside had tried to hang himself and 'took something' before dousing the inside of the house with petrol and setting fire to it. He then jumped out of a window.

 

It it believed the injured man had been working on the new property which is not completed.

He is being treated in hospital but is not seriously injured.

 

The incident at 4.30pm left Bank Street residents in shock, especially those who discovered the injured man.

 

One woman, who did not want to be named, said she and her partner had put him into the recovery position and called for an ambulance.

 

A spokeswoman for the South Yorkshire force said CID officers were looking into the incident and further enquiries were still ongoing in order to ascertain the cause of the fire.
