A 24-year-old had to be transported to hospital by air ambulance after suffering serious injuries when his car hit a stone wall and gate post near Haigh.
The incident happened on Saturday at about 1.25pm and a spokesman for the police said the Barnsley man was driving an orange Kia Picanto on the A637 Huddersfield Road towards Darton.
The Kia is believed to have taken a left hand bend on the crest of a hill and then the vehicle left the road, colliding with a stone wall and a gate post outside Highwood Farm.
The man suffered serious injuries including broken legs and a fractured pelvis, and was taken to Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield.
The road was closed 'for some time' according to a Kexborough resident who also said the air ambulance landed in a nearby field and attended the scene for about half an hour.
Anyone who witnessed the incident, or can provide information about the manner of driving before the collision, is urged to contact South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 598 of February 23, 2013.
