THE family of an inspirational youngster who died of terminal cancer last year are aiming to raise £100,000 in his honour - and thanks to a recent 20-mile charity hike they’re a few thousand pounds closer.
Oliver Howe spent years battling, however throughout that time always kept a smile on his face as he got the opportunity to meet some of his celebrity idols and undertake trips across the country before his untimely death at eight years old last February.
To mark the first anniversary of his death, Oliver’s family began a ‘Memory Meadow’ fundraising page, where they aim to raise cash for the Children’s Hospital Charity in his honour and as thanks for the work they did.
They recently passed the £10,000 milestone, with his parents David and Laura Howe competing in last month’s Sheffield 10k to raise funds.
Now, another £3,140 can be added to the total, as Oliver’s aunt, Emma Watson, alongside George Burtoft and other colleagues at the Symphony Group in Grimethorpe undertook a 20-mile-long walk taking them from Manvers across the Trans Pennine Trail to Meadowhall and then through to the Sheffield hospital.
She told the Chronicle: “It went really well - the weather thankfully stayed dry for us.
“We’re all trying to raise as much as we can for the hospital now.
“My colleague George’s daughter got really ill in the first few years of her life - thankfully she’s all fine now.
“It motivated us to go out and raise money - I was doing it for the children’s hospital while he wanted to also raise some funds for the Sick Children’s Trust.”
The money will be split evenly between the two charities and anyone wishing to donate can find the Go Fund Me link on the Chronicle’s website.
