Exeter City will look for a third successive win at Oakwell when they face Barnsley from 7.45pm on Tuesday.

The Reds are 11th in the table, eight points off the top six. They are winless in five after a 1-1 draw at Wigan on Saturday.

Gary Caldwell’s Exeter are 17th in the table, nine points clear of the drop zone and nine behind the Reds.

They were unbeaten in six before losing 2-0 at home high-flying Wrexham on Saturday.

Barnsley interim head coach Conor Hourihane told the Chronicle: “They are a good side.

"They cause you problems and like to dominate the ball. In the last couple of games they have probably been more solid defensively.

“That’s something we have looked at and how we can break them down.

“I know their assistant manager (Kevin Nicholson), he’s on a course I am on. We need to be bang at it.”

The Reds have the 20th best home record in the division with 22 points from 19 games, while no side has conceded more goals on their own turf.

Hourihane said: “I definitely want to change the home form. The fans want to see exciting football, goals and a committed team ready to do anything to win a game of football. It’s obviously been an issue but I want to come away from that.

“People were saying we never get a result in the pink kit at the weekend and we managed to get a draw. That’s one positive and hopefully there will be another one on Tuesday with three points at home.

“I am trying not to mention it too much. If you mention it all the time it’s in the players’ heads.

“We have had a little bit of a fresh start in the last couple of games. We got a draw at home against Cambridge which is something to build on – we want to win every game but at least we ended it on a high with a late goal and hopefully we can bring that momentum into the Exeter game.”

Exeter have former Barnsley captain Angus McDonald who played for the Reds from 2017 to 2019.

Ex-Red Jack Aitchison is yet to score this season in 28 league games but did net at Oakwell last season for City.

Former Barnsley midfielder David Perkins, now 42, also played for them earlier this season in the EFL Trophy but is on the coaching staff along with another ex-Red Kevin Miller.

The clubs have met 25 times, with Barnsley winning nine and losing 12.

The Reds won 2-1 at St James Park in December, coming from behind thanks to goals by Kelechi Nwakali and Davis Keillor-Dunn.

Exeter have won at Oakwell in each of the previous two seasons. They won 2-1 in January of last year, ending an 11-game unbeaten streak for the Reds, having also defeated Michael Duff’s side early in the previous season.
