Boxer Cory Sagar got off to a winning start as a professional at the Magna Centre in Rotherham on Saturday night.
The Barnsley super-middleweight was handed a deserved 40-36 verdict against Londoner Robbie Chapman. Sagar, who followed in his grandfather and father's footsteps by boxing, was energetic throughout the contest. Chapman, an unorthodox journeyman, brought much hilarity when he responded to a fan’s shout of violent instructions to Sagar with: ’that’s not very nice.’ Each of the first three rounds concluded with Chapman under heavy fire in his own corner – but it was something he sternly stood up to. Sagar, who was cornered by former British, Commonwealth and European champion Jason Cunningham, kept up the pressure right until the end of the fight and was firing with the same speed at the end of the contest as he had done at the start.
