A BARNSLEY charity dedicated to supporting women who experience domestic abuse is calling on local residents to donate evening dresses ahead of the prom season in a bid to support young girls across the town.

Resolute Women’s Support Service has its base at The Lotus Charity Shop on Regent Street South.

CEO and founder of the charity, Deborah Jones, has started the initiative which aims to support young girls who may be struggling with the financial pressures of the cost-of living-crisis, giving them the opportunity to attend their prom in a beautiful dress, while also raising vital funds to support the charity’s ongoing mission.

Deborah said that with prom season fast approaching, many young girls face the difficult reality of not being able to afford the costs associated with the event, including purchasing a prom dress.

The charity say that they are committed to ensuring that no young person misses out on this important milestone due to financial hardship.

They are therefore asking local people to donate evening dresses to the charity shop.

Deborah says any donation could make a significant difference in the lives of young girls, while also helping the charity raise much-needed funds to continue its work in empowering women and girls in Barnsley and beyond.

She added: “We understand the financial pressures many families are facing right now, and we want to ensure that every young girl has the chance to enjoy her prom night, regardless of her circumstances.

“By donating an evening dress to The Lotus, you’re not just giving a young girl the opportunity to experience this special event, but you’re also helping us fund vital support for women throughout the year.”

The shop has been a ‘vital hub’ for supporting the community - and Deborah is hoping the scheme will help support even more people.

Now, as part of their prom dress drive, the shop is asking for donations of gently used or new evening dresses suitable for prom, as well as accessories such as shoes, bags, and jewellery.

Donating is simple - just drop off your items at The Lotus on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and the team will handle the rest.

All proceeds from the sale of donated items will go directly towards Resolute Women’s mission to empower women and girls, offering practical support, guidance, and resources to help them thrive.

Deborah, who set up the charity after her own experiences of domestic abuse, said the support of the town has been incredible since its inception.

She added: “We’re incredibly grateful for the generosity of our local community.

“Every dress donated will help a young girl feel confident and special at her prom, while also contributing to the important work we do year-round to support women and girls in need.”
