MAX WATTERS is delighted to be back in the Barnsley squad and on the scoresheet after an ankle injury.

The striker missed a month of action, which was part of the six-game winless run which saw the gap to the play-offs grow to ten points.

He returned to the squad last week then came off the bench to score the winner against Lincoln on Saturday.

Watters told the Chronicle: “It was my second game back so it’s good to be playing and back on the scoresheet.

“When you are sitting in the physio room and the team is losing you just want to be out with the boys, and it’s frustrating. But you just have to work hard with the injuries and try to get back as fast as you can.”

Watters is in his third season with the Reds, having reached the play-offs in his first two.

They are currently trying to close the gap to the top six.

“There is always work to do but we can see positives in how we’re improving. It’s been good to see the gaffer’s work paying off for the team.

“Hopefully we can get play-offs this year and make it a successful one.”

Watters’ goal against Lincoln came after fellow substitute Josh Benson won the ball near the halfway line.

He said: “Josh did well to win it, I didn’t expect him to.

“I saw the ball was floating about and I thought ‘I am going to take this and go.’ The ‘keeper wasn’t set so I took an early shot and it turned out to be a good finish.”
