A round-up of some Barnsley FC related stories coming out of the weekend.
CLARKE: IT’S STRAIGHT ON TO TUESDAY
Darrell Clarke knows Barnsley must build on their ‘really pleasing’ win at Rotherham United on Saturday with another victory at Northampton Town in midweek.
The Reds ended a run of one point from six games in the South Yorkshire clash and moved up a place to tenth in League One while cutting the gap to the play-offs from ten to seven points.
Kevin Nolan’s Cobblers are 17th, four points and four places clear of the relegation zone after winning three of their last four games.
Head coach Clarke told the Chronicle: “I won’t change. I think that was my 275th win as a manager.
“You will have spells where you’re not getting the results you would like. You do have sleepless nights but you have them when you’re winning games as well.
“It was great to win a derby and I was really pleased with the grit and determination but it’s a big week for us and it’s straight on to Tuesday which is another game that we have to look to win.
“We can say we need a load of wins, which we do, but it’s always the next game with me.”
WOMEN SECURE VITAL VICTORY
Barnsley FC women moved a step closer to safety in the National League Division One North with a 3-0 win at home to York City on Sunday.
That left the Reds seventh in the table with 20 points from 17 games. They are seven points clear of the two-team relegation zone.
Charley Evans, Jodie Gregory and Louise Biggins scored against a York side who could have overtaken their hosts with a win.
Barnsley have five matches left, starting at leaders Cheadle Town Stingers on Sunday while they also have the other three teams in the current top four to play as well as lowly Norton and Stockton Ancients. The season is due to run until April 27.
Coach Jess Horsley said: “It was a massive game, especially down in the bottom half of the table with everyone fighting.
“To get three points was brilliant and all the other results went our way.”
AWAY WINS FOR U18S AND U21S
Barnsley under 21s won 3-2 at Birmingham City on Friday.
Josiah Dyer, a trialist and Jean Claude Makiessi put the Reds 3-1 up at the break before a second half reply. It was a second successive win for the under 21s.
They are now due to host Charlton Athletic on Tuesday, March 4.
Barnsley under 18s won 2-1 at Fleetwood Town on Saturday.
Feyi Afuape and Kalaab Daniel netted.
The under 18s are due to play at home to Wigan Athletic on Tuesday from 11.30am then host Hull City on Friday from 2pm.
