Successful small businesses are essential for both our local community and economy.
From cafes and pubs to small shops and newsagents, Barnsley is gifted with local businesses that are loved by many.
I know how hard the owners of these businesses work to ensure they stay open.
However, after 14 years of Conservative government, too many high street shops and local businesses have been forced to close.
Indeed, in 2023 alone over 6,000 pubs and 10,000 local shops shut across the country.
Shop workers and businesses have also experienced high levels of shoplifting and violence, with figures showing a 29 per cent spike in incidents.
As a result, since 2019 the UK has been in last place for business investment in the G7, with countries like Slovenia, Latvia, and Hungary all attracting higher levels.
It is in this context that I am proud to support Small Business Saturday, an initiative that looks to champion the role of local business in creating good jobs, growth and opportunities.
I know that many local businesses want a reliable government that will take real, practical steps to help them thrive.
That is why I am pleased the Labour government has announced a comprehensive package of policies to help small businesses.
Certainly, Labour will permanently lower business rates for shops, pubs and leisure businesses - paying for it by asking online giants to pay their fair share of tax.
Until then, 250,000 properties, including pubs, restaurants and high street shops will receive up to 40 per cent off their business rates bills, up to £110,000 per business.
The government will also help small businesses access loans, with the budget providing £250m to the British Business Bank’s small business loans programmes.
Last year, I ran a local award for Small Business Saturday, inviting you to nominate a business that you love in the area.
If you are a small business owner who would like me to come and visit, or know of a local shop, cafe or venture that deserves some recognition, please do feel free to be in contact with my office.
Thank you to all those who are working hard to keep our local high streets, economy and community alive. Your work is appreciated.
