BARNSLEY under 21s won on penalties at Athersley Rec after a 1-1 draw in the Sheffield Senior Cup on Wednesday evening.

The young Reds have entered the competition for the first time to provide some different experiences for their developing players.

They made the short trip to Sheerien Park where they fell behind after ten minutes with Josh Berry netting for the Penguins.

Josiah Dyer levelled before the break then, with the scores level after 90 minutes, the game went to a shoot-out.

Barnsley scored all four of their spot-kicks with Athersley putting their first over the bar then seeing another saved by Kieren Flavell who had made his debut for the first team the previous evening in the EFL Trophy against Doncaster Rovers.

The young Reds are now due to visit Shelley in the next round of the cup, which is the last 16.

The other clubs from the Barnsley area who are still in the competition are Wombwell Town, Dearne and District and Silkstone United.
