A GRIMETHORPE man whose son was cared for by ‘superheroes’ at Barnsley Hospital has raised thousands of pounds by completing a marathon - with 20kg of weight strapped to him.

Ryan Hinchliffe, 37, decided to raise money for the hospital’s neonatal unit after his son, Freddie, was born two months prematurely.

He first ran the Sheffield Half Marathon with the 20kg weighted vest with his friends but he wanted to go one further this time - completing the Yorkshire Marathon.

Ryan told the Chronicle: “In 2022 my son was born two months’ premature at Barnsley Hospital.

“All the nurses and staff were absolutely brilliant - they’re just superheroes.

“At first we did a half marathon but we wanted to go one further this time.

“We completed the Yorkshire Marathon at the weekend.

“We always knew that it was going to be tough but we wanted to just go that one step further.”

Ryan ran the race alongside friends Ashley Greenwood, 31, Christopher Marshall, 42, Jordan Bond, 46, Daniel Staves, 36, Ian Fearnley, 39, Sammy Williams, 40, and Lee Hatfield, 52.

Together they’ve so far raised more than £3,000 - bringing the total raised to almost £8,000.

Jane Mills, Barnsley Hospital Charity’s development manager, added: “We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Ryan and his incredible friends for their outstanding effort in completing the gruelling Yorkshire Marathon to raise funds for our neonatal unit.”
