COREY Sagar is the third generation of his family to box and has become one of Barnsley’s latest professional fighters.
The 20-year-old bricklayer from Worsbrough Common is set to compete at super-welterweight.
His dad Chris Sagar is a former combined services boxing champion during his time in the army.
Corey’s grandfather John Sagar competed as an amateur and professional boxer in the 1970s, fighting the legendary Kirkland Laing who would go on to beat superstar Roberto Duran in one of the sport’s great upsets.
John now runs amateur boxing club Barnsley Star along with Trevor Schofield, where Corey has trained since the age of nine.
He has turned professional with local promoter Stefy Bull.
Corey said: “My dad boxed and won a lot in the army and my granddad boxed The Gifted One (Laing).
“I have learned a lot from them both.
“It’s been a good experience.
“I always wanted to turn pro. Amateur boxing really didn’t suit me – there are not enough rounds.
“I know professional boxing will suit me better.”
Sagar is hoping to make his professional debut on a show at the Metrodome on November 23.
If not, it looks likely to be early next year.
“I just want to see how far I can go.
“I would love to go all the way and win a world title.
“But I will start small and build a career, then see how far I get.
“Callum Simpson started in the same amateur gym as me.
“I know him personally.
“He’s obviously getting to the top level now and that’s what I want to do as well.”
The show at the Metrodome next month is set to feature unbeaten Dempsey Wale, from Brampton, debutant Jake Cleary from Wombwell and also JA Metcalfe, from Cudworth, who is set to return after three years away from the sport.
