A VETERAN military campaigner who was awarded the freedom of his beloved town is retiring.

Joe Pinguey has been the organiser of military events and anniversaries since 2010.

However, now into his 80s, he’s stepping down due to ill health and mobility issues having played an integral role

He has played an integral role in the restoration of the Commonwealth war graves in Penistone’s Stottercliffe Cemetery.

“Both my late parents and uncle served in the RAF in World War Two and I have the greatest respect for all service personnel past and present,” Joe said.

“I didn’t even know the Freedom of Penistone award existed.

“I haven’t done all this work for fame and glory - I have done it because I wanted to for my community.

“I’ve had a good 14 years at it but due to health and mobility issues I am standing down from further military events and anniversaries.

“The position of volunteer at Stottercliffe Cemetery is vacant if anybody or group would take on the role.

‘I would be willing to show anybody the 11 war graves situated in the cemetery.”

Coun Hannah Kitching, who represents Penistone West and is also on Penistone Town Council, praised Joe’s work.

He added: “Joe has been an integral part of community life and service in Penistone for so many years now.

“He has been committed not only to his work on armed forces and veterans, but also to improving Penistone more generally.

“He definitely deserves to enjoy his retirement.

“Despite no longer enjoying excellent health I still receive at least one email from Joe each week advising me of jobs that need to be done around the town - long may that continue.”
