Barnsley conceded an 88th-minute leveller but Stephen Humphrys netted a 90th—minute winner in a 2-1 victory at Burton Albion on Saturday.
Luca Connell’s excellent long-range free-kick had the Reds ahead at the break.
Burton levelled with their first real chance but Humphrys’ first goal for the club saw them bounce back after two heavy losses.
Corey O’Keeffe came in for the concussed Donovan Pines in the only change from the last league game at Stevenage a week earlier. Adam Phillips and Davis Keillor-Dunn played as attacking midfielders behind striker Sam Cosgrove.
Very little happened in the opening quarter of the game, but Burton’s Kegs Chauke saw a low long-range shot easily saved by Gaga Slonina.
Barnsley’s first real attack was in the 29th minute when Barry Cotter’s right-wing cross was nodded back across goal by Cosgrove and Phillips headed over ten yards out.
The goal came in the 38th minute when Connell – who was taken out by Elliot Watt – fired the 30-yard free-kick into the bottom left corner.
Burton thought they should have had a penalty seconds later when Udoka Godwin-Malife tumbled to the ground in the box after alleged contact by Matty Craig but the referee waved appeals away.
Keillor-Dunn then sent an overhead kick effort over the bar inside the box.
In the second half, after Cosgrove won a header from a long ball, Keillor-Dunn’s fierce 20-yard volley was well saved by Max Crocombe then Phillips’ effort on the rebound was just wide of the bottom left corner from the edge of the box.
Connell then had a shot blocked at the end of a good counter-attack, started by Phillips and Cosgrove, when he should have released Cotter in space.
At the other end, Slonina easily saved a long-range Watt shot.
Connell came off with what looked like a knock and was replaced by Josh Benson.
Substitute Fabio Jalo saw a powerful shot from the left of the box turned behind by Crocombe following a pass by Benson after Earl won the ball and ran about 50 yards with it up the left wing.
Benson then tried to lob the goalkeeper from 35 yards but Crocombe got back to catch the ball.
Watt volleyed well over from the edge of the Barnsley box.
Jalo came off with what looked like another shoulder problem, with Kyran Lofthouse replacing him.
Jack Cooper-Love levelled with a header from a cross by ex-Red Tomas Kalinauskas. But, two minutes later, Corey O’Keeffe’s left-wing free-kick was flicked by Humphrys into the bottom right corner to spark jubilant scenes in the away end and away dugout.
