DAVIS Keillor-Dunn says playing and winning at Oakwell on the away team this season was a ‘strange one’ but is now hoping to enjoy success there as a Barnsley player.
The 26-year-old joined from Mansfield Town for an undisclosed fee on Friday, which was deadline day – signing a three-year deal.
He had played in Mansfield’s 2-1 win at Oakwell on the opening night of the season, while negotiations were ongoing between the two clubs.
Keillor-Dunn told the Chronicle: “Barnsley is one of those you look at the fixture list and want to play in that stadium. I looked for Birmingham, Barnsley, Huddersfield and Rotherham when the fixtures came out. I was buzzing to see that was the first fixture for Mansfeld.
“When I heard of the interest, it was a bit of a strange one but you have to be professional and crack on.
“A few of the Barnsley fans were giving me stick because I hadn’t signed already.
“But it was a great atmosphere.”
Keillor-Dunn’s career has mainly been spent in League Two but he is keen to remind people that he has had success in League One previously.
“I always say the only hat-trick I have scored was in League One (for Burton Albion at Accrington in August 2022). Hopefully there are a few more hat-tricks to come. I am not promising them every week.
“I am really looking forward to having a good full season in League One and implementing what I can do in this league. I fully back myself to do that.”
Keillor-Dunn is cup-tied for Barnsley’s trip to Manchester United in the EFL Cup later this month.
“It’s the way it goes. I played against Bolton for Mansfield in the cup. It’s disappointing but hopefully the lads can go there and do something really really special.”
After starting off at Ross County, the Sunderland-born attacker had a brief spell at Wrexham, made his name at Oldham then, after half a season at Burton – which was his only experience in League One until this campaign – spent 18 months with Mansfield.
He can play up front or midfield but says his favourite position is ‘number ten’ attacking midfield.
