BARNSLEY Civic is gearing up for the grand reopening of its historic Eldon Street entrance next week after a 26-year closure.

After being closed to the public in 1998, the doors will reopen and welcome everyone to a day filled with family-friendly entertainment, performances and activities from 11am on Saturday.

As part of the celebration, Barnsley Civic and the Glass Works’ team will bring back the Barnsley Garden Party on the same day in the town centre’s public square.

At Barnsley Civic, visitors can look forward to a vibrant lineup of street performances, live music, workshops and exhibitions throughout the day.

In Mandela Gardens, guests can relax with a picnic, enjoy the sounds of the Frumptarn Guggenband, watch a modern re-telling of Red Riding Hood.

Performances from Barnsley Civic’s resident theatre companies and students from Barnsley Music Service will also be featured, showcasing local talent and creativity.

Inside Barnsley Civic, a range of drop-in workshops will invite people of all ages to try their hand at collage, origami, circus skills and dance.

A spokesperson said: “We invite everyone to come along, explore the building and be a part of an historic moment.

“With activities for all ages and interests, there is no need to book for most events - visitors can simply turn up and join the celebration.”
