Charley Evans’ long-range stunner gave Barnsley FC Women a 1-0 cup win at home to Barnsley Women’s FC in the Women’s National League Cup at Oakwell on Wednesday.

It was the first meeting ever of the Oakwell-based club and Sheffield-based BWFC who split with the men’s team and have moved to several locations since, with the intention of returning to Barnsley in the future.

Both sides are in the National League but Barnsley WFC have moved to the Midlands League for this season, which is the Oakwell club’s first in the fourth tier after two successive promotions.

The visiting goalkeeper Serena Clarke pulled off two excellent one-on-one saves from Ruby Jex-Oldfield then home stopper Serena Clarke smartly denied a 20-yard effort by Misty Russell.

Lauryn Wilcock saw a shot from the left of the box saved by Clarke.

Home captain Evans then opened the scoring with a spectacular 25-yard left-footed strike into the bottom right corner on 72 minutes.

Home defender Alayna Millard gifted a big chance to visiting substitute Olivia Richardson who took a poor touch when clean through on goal.

Betty Cheetham saved off the line for the hosts from a Paige Crossman shot in injury-time.
