A GoFundMe page set up to support the son of a couple who died in the tragic A61 collision at the weekend is no longer accepting donations.
The page was set up by Vicky Beckett yesterday and currently stands at over £8k but the family of Christopher and Janine Barton last night asked people not to donate and for the page to be taken down.
A family member said on Facebook last night: “As a family, we have not approved this GoFundMe or had any correspondence since it was set up. Please do not donate or share for others to do so. We all appreciate all of your generosity so much and are completely touched by your thoughts and well wishes however.
“I have spoken to my cousin and he has asked for this to be removed. As a family we agreed we didn't want this and it has caused us further upset seeing people's comments while trying to grieve. I again am so touched by people's well wishes and thoughts and we are extremely grateful, however our wishes and privacy should have been considered before this was ever set up. Thank you all for understanding.”
There is no suggestion that the GoFundMe page was set up with anything but the best of intentions to help the family and we understand that GoFundMe has been asked to arrange for all donations to be refunded.
A message on the page says: ‘This fundraiser is no longer accepting donations. If you are the organiser, a beneficiary, team member or donor, sign in to see additional information'.
