He knows Barnsley plays at Oakwell and is looking forward to supporting the Reds - but he's never heard of Kipper Jackson.
Soldier Dan Jarvis has been selected as Labour's candidate in the by-election to replace Eric Illsley. Nottingham-raised Dan still has a few things to learn about Barnsley, but says he is looking forward to making the town his home if he wins.
"Barnsley is a great community with a proud history. The challenge for me now is to win the trust of the people of Barnsley Central."
He has been in the Parachute Regiment for 15 years. This morning he went to Athersley to meet some voters and three local councillors.
One voter said: "I'm behind you 100 per cent because the BNP will be coming round here again and I think it's disgraceful. We don't want them."
The St Helen's Ward councillors, all Labour, said he had not been 'parachuted in' and it was the local party members who selected him.
"He'll be a good candidate," said Coun Roy Butterwood. "He'll lead from the front, and he knows the people of Barnsley don't suffer fools gladly."
