THE principal of Upperwood Academy in Darfield retired yesterday after 29 years’ service - and he says he’s looking forward to a spot of relaxing.
Alistair Budd, described as a ‘legend of Darfield’, joined the school as its deputy head when he was just 28 - and he’s risen up the ranks to become principal.
Friday was his last day teaching at the school he loves so much.
The 57-year-old told the Chronicle: “I came here at 28 - it was a lovely school then and it’s a lovely school now.
“I’m teaching the children of pupils that I’ve taught in the past.
“It’s been a pleasure to support the children of Darfield for so long.
“I became the head in 2008 after 13 years of being the deputy - I’ve always had a lovely group of staff.”
Alistair admits he’s now looking forward to taking a step away from his emails for the foreseeable future.
“Even parents who don’t live in the area anymore are still bringing their children here so it shows we’re doing something right,” he added.
“My plan now is holidays, relaxing and not having to look at my emails every minute of every day.”
