CAWTHORNE Church of England Primary School was packed out recently as members of the community gathered to see its pupils’ artwork.
Over the past year the school has been running an art and wellbeing project with the help of Cannon Hall Museum, Barnsley College and All Saints’ Church.
The pupils focused on the work of William and Evelyn De Morgan - whose art is featured at Cannon Hall - and received help from director of the De Morgan Museum, Sarah Hardy.
It comes as the school is aiming to achieve its gold wellbeing award, and is using art to teach students more about their own wellbeing.
On Monday, the school opened its doors and hosted an exhibition, which was attended by Mayor and Mayoress John and Doreen Clarke, as well as deputy lieutenant, Canon Keith Farrow of All Saints’ Church.
Deputy headteacher Ruth Kukula told the Chronicle: “We’d been working with Sarah before.
“She’s helped us through this - we got to take the kids out to Cannon Hall to see the De Morgan work.
“We’ve got this museum right on our doorstep but so many people have never been
“There are five elements to our wellbeing work and through this we’ve been able to look at them them all - we’ve connected with these local places, been active and taken the kids out, taken notice of all the things in our area, learnt about this art, and now we’re giving it out for others to see.
“It’s been a year-long project, and we’re hoping to take it further next year.”
