WOMBWELL Town Football Club’s ground is receiving a council-funded makeover.

The ongoing works include redecoration and damp-proofing of the clubhouse, electrical works, improvements to the toilets and installation of a new decking area.

It is part of the council’s principal towns and local centres programme, which aims to enhance community facilities around the borough.

Town play in the Northern Counties East League, having been promoted from the County Senior League last year following improvements to their Station Road ground.

They are hoping to move up through the non-league system and become one of Barnsley’s highest-placed teams ever.

Manager Karl Rose said: “We are delighted that the council is investing in our club and our centre, which are vital for the wellbeing and cohesion of our community.

“We are looking forward to seeing the results of the transformation and welcoming more people to enjoy our facilities and activities.”

Coun Robin Franklin, the council’s cabinet spokesperson for regeneration and culture, said: “The works at Wombwell Town Football Club are a great example of how our principal towns and local centres programme is making a positive difference to the lives of our residents.

“We are proud to work with the club and the centre to improve their facilities and I’m sure the start of works will be welcomed by club members and the wider community.”
