CALLUM Simpson’s British and Commonwealth super middleweight title fight at Oakwell in August sold out in a record-breaking 48 hours.

The Barnsley boxer will fight current champion Zak Chelli at the stadium on August 3.

Simpson - who is a regular at Oakwell as a fan and has been brought out onto the pitch after winning previous belts - has won all 14 of his professional fights, ten by knockout.

Chelli, 26, has had 18 professional bouts - winning 15, losing twice and drawing once.

Tickets sold out in a ‘record time’ according to the club, who say hospitality packages are now the only way to watch the fight live in person. However, fans who have missed out on purchasing their tickets for the fight have been asked to sign up to Boxxer’s waiting list should anything change.

Boxxer founder and CEO Ben Shalom said: “The response to this event has been incredible.

“The sold out East Stand will be rocking as local lad Callum Simpson takes on defending champion Zak Chelli. This shows that Barnsley really do get behind their own.

“Fans and fighters can expect a red hot atmosphere inside Oakwell on Saturday, August 3.”

Barnsley FC chief executive Jon Flatman added: “We knew that the community would get behind Callum and the ticket sales show that this has certainly been the case.

“We would encourage anyone wanting to come along on August 3 to join the waiting list and I’d personally like to thank all those who have already purchased for their incredible support.”

The undercard will feature Irish star Stephen McKenna against Joe Laws for the WBC International Silver super-welterweight title.

Manchester prospect Mauro Silva also features.
