John Stones sat out England’s 3-0 win in a friendly with Bosnia and Herzegovina at St James’ Park in Newcastle on Monday, with former Barnsley loanee Kieran Trippier the stand-in captain.

England are now due to host Iceland at Wembley on Friday in their final warm-up match before flying to Germany for the European Championships in which they are in a group with Serbia, Denmark and Slovenia.

The provisional squad of 33 is due to be cut down to 26 after Friday's game. Ivan Toney, another former Barnsley loanee, is in the squad but was an unused substitute against Bosnia.

Stones, who is from Thurlstone and started his career with Barnsley, joined up with the squad late following Manchester City’s FA Cup final loss. He is set to go to his fifth major tournament – looking to add to his 71 caps.

The 30-year-old former Penistone Grammar School student has won – with City – six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, two EFL Cups, the Champions League and the Club World Cup. But he has no international honours, having been part of the team beaten on penalties in the last Euros by Italy at Wembley in 2021.
