FOOTBALL-loving Calum Smith turned his hobby into a profession by launching his own coaching business.

The 19-year-old Barnsley College University Centre coaching, physical education and sports development student turned his passion into a business last year with the launch of SWS Football Organisation.

Based at Barnsley College Business Centre, and supported by former sports student Ryan Smith, the company works with more than 30 primary schools, helping children between four and 12 to improve their football skills.

Calum said: “When Ryan contacted me to see if this was an opportunity I could be a part of I jumped at the chance.

“I have developed many skills by owning my own business, from time keeping to tax and finance.

“The course has helped massively; the support and knowledge of my tutors has improved my coaching and understanding of the importance of physical education, which I’ve transferred into my own coaching sessions.

“We are looking to expand into other sports - having an office in Barnsley College Business Centre has enabled us to recruit a marketing specialist and given us a space to make it our own.”

Calum has been put forward for the Young Entrepreneur award at this year’s Young Champions.

He added: “I’m shocked really, I didn’t think I’d get recognised like this.

“Everything’s going well, it’s getting busier and busier as time goes on.

“It’s a difficult time to run a business, especially a sports business because there are so many, but we’re getting our name out there and showing we’re reliable.

“We try to work at more deprived areas in Barnsley - we offer good coaching at an affordable price for parents.

“Now we’re looking to try and expand into more sports, we’re looking at esports and working with more schools.

“We’re always keen to find new ideas and push the business further.”

Liam Dickinson, sports higher education pathway leader at Barnsley College University Centre, said: “Calum has always been a determined and hardworking student, keen to pursue a career within sport. Calum has a logical and positive approach to his life and studies.

“Congratulations Calum on starting up your own business, you are an inspiration to your tutors and peers. I wish you every success for the future.”
