A GOLDTHORPE man who has raised more than £20,000 for Weston Park Cancer Charity has been nominated for a Proud of Barnsley award.

Carl Mellor, 40, has raised thousands for the charity in the past through a variety of means but he usually walks from ground to ground to raise funds.

Earlier this year, he set off from Oakwell at around 7am to get to Sheffield United’s ground in time for the South Yorkshire derby - and it’s something he does regularly.

He told the Chronicle: “All the fundraising I do is for Weston Park Cancer Charity and since 2018 I’ve raised more than £20,000.

“I got into it because my step-dad was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in his tonsils and his neck.

“I never expected to raise so much when I started.

“It was just going to be a one-off event but the first one was really successful and we raised around £3,500.

“We organised a walk earlier this year from Oakwell to Bramall Lane but most recently we raised just under £1,000 on Saturday.”

Upon hearing of his nomination in the Charity Fundraiser category, Carl added: “I’ve said it before but I don’t do any of this for recognition.

“It’s a surprise but it is really nice to be nominated.”
