MEET the Newton family, the main characters of Profit and Loss, the forthcoming commemorative play to mark the 170th anniversary of the Huskar Pit disaster.
The play looks at their lives through the eyes of Ann, who lost a daughter in the disaster. It starts in 1842 covering the Royal Commission on Mining following the disaster and then goes back to 1838 to re-create the fateful events of July 4.
Linda Marshall, who will be playing Ann, said: "When I came to live in Silkstone I heard about the disaster and it had a real impact on me. Many people won't be aware of the tragedy so it is good to bring back to life, especially for the children."
One of the 26 children who died when torrential rain flooded the pit was eight-year-old Sarah Newton. Rosie Wild, who is playing the character, said: "It is a good part to play but I'm glad I don't really have to do what they did. I feel really sorry for them, it is not their fault they had to drown."
The play will be shown in All Saints' Church from June 30 to July 7. Tickets will be on sale in Silkstone Pharmacy, The Cottage Bakery, Silkstone Common, or from Rachel on 791130 from Saturday May 17.
