POLICE are hunting those responsible for a spate of graffiti in Barnsley, including the culprits behind a distinctive ‘hangdog’ face tag that has appeared across the borough.

The tag - a downbeat face usually on a grey background - has been painted onto telephone exchange and internet boxes, phone boxes, and on the sides of town centre buildings and even the front door of a derelict Victorian villa in the town centre conservation area.

The ‘painty face’, as it has been daubed on one tag, is thought to be the work of the ‘OSA Crew’ or ‘One Step Ahead Crew’ and has also been spotted in Darton, Mapplewell, Monk Bretton and Athersley. A few have also been seen in the Royston and Cudworth areas which, the Chronicle understands, is where council officers believe the tag first appeared.

It is also understood there are stickers with the same image on them.
