CONSULTANTS are expected to provide findings on plans to turn Elsecar into an internationally important tourist destination as early as the spring - though it will be years before full plans to transform the area can be put into action.
The £500,000 restoration of the Newcomen beam engine, used to pump water from Elsecar colliery in the 19th Century and the only one anywhere left on its original site, was used to kickstart the project.
Now Barnsley Council believes the village has the potential to be developed in a way similar to Saltaire in West Yorkshire, with “huge potential” which could see it become a destination of international importace.
Masterplanning work for the future of Elsecar Heritage Centre and the surrounding village is now taking place and consultants responsible for the work are expected to report back in the next few months.
