All four Labour MPs covering the Barnsley area have been re-elected.

UKIP came out second and beat the Conservatives into third place in Barnsley Central, and Barnsley East and Wentworth and Dearne.

In Barnsley Central the Green Party - contesting Barnsley Central for the first time - came fourth out of seven candidates.

Labour won 55.7 per cent of the overall vote in Barnsley Central on a turnout of 56.6 per cent. It gives Mr Jarvis a majority of 12,435, up from 11,093 when Eric Illsley retained the same seat five years ago. In Barnsley East Labour won 54.7 per cent of the vote, turnout 55.7 per cent, and Mr Dugher's majority is now 12,034, up from 11,090 last time.

John Healey has also been re-elected for Labour in Wentworth and Dearne, as has Angela Smith in Penistone and Stocksbridge.

Mr Jarvis said: "I'm really proud. I've worked hard for four years and I have done the best job that I can. I think people know that I am passionate about Barnsley and I am proud they have put their trust and faith in me.

"We have increased the majority and I take that as a sign of that faith and trust." But he refused to be drawn into speculation about whether he would replace Labour leader Ed Miliband if Labour lost the general election. "My priority is always going to be working for the people of Barnsley."

Michael Dugher also refused to speculate on the likely leadership vacancy and his own future, but said he was extremely pleased with the support shown for him in Barnsley East. "It's quite a humbling experience when you get more than 20,000 people - some of whom you know, and some who you don't - who have gone out there and given their support and to you.

"The most important thing is that I will remember who put me here. The people who voted for me, the people who didn't and the people who didn't vote at all - I'm still your MP and will work hard every day for the next five years.

"I grew up in Edlington, a pit village, a I've never forgotten where I have come from and will never forget who put me there."
