A MONK Bretton landmark for nearly two centuries, the Butchers' Arms, could be demolished to make way for a new development.
The red brick building in High Street with the junction of Judy Row, has been derelict for some years after closing as a pub and has been vandalised and set on fire on several occasions.
Now a planning application has been made to Barnsley Council for the building to be demolished and a doctor's surgery, pharmacy with five flats above to be built on the site.
A local resident said: "Although it is well-built, it has become the most rundown property in the heart of the village. It is one of the oldest buildings in the village and over the years was well used by miners on their way home from the pit. For the local colliery football team it was their headquarters and was also home for pigeon flyers when Mr and Mrs Bill Hurd were licensees.
"It is a pity to lose another historic building but sadly the Butchers' Arms has become an eyesore and the area will be much safer for the public."
Those wishing to object to the demolition can write to Barnsley Council.
