A RARE map of Bolton and Goldthorpe dating back more than 170 years has been donated to the archives at Experience Barnsley.

The tithe map from 1839 was in the hands of a private local historian until their death at the end of last year and it has now found its way to the museum.

Paul Stebbing, the archives and local studies manager, said: "It's a unique document that can show us what the area looked like in the 1830s and how it has developed since then.

"There is only three of each of these types of map so it was unusual for it to end up in private hands anyway. It's rare and will be of interest to a lot of people who have interests in the history of Bolton and Goldthorpe."
