THE festive season is upon us, and Barnsley is once again brimming with Christmas spirit.
From light switch-ons to Christmas markets to exceptional choir performances, there’s been a fantastic array of activities across the borough and many more still to come.
We’ve already enjoyed highlights like the Barnsley Christmas Market while the weather allowed us to, the Christmas Lights Switch-On, and Christmas at the Town Hall. These events have set the stage for a magical festive season, offering a wonderful mix of local traders, festive food, and dazzling displays.
Beyond the town centre, our local communities have shone brightly too.
Events such as Cudworth Christmas, the Lundwood Christmas Fair, and Kexborough Christmas have brought people together, creating a real sense of celebration and togetherness.
We’ve also had a series of incredible concerts by the world-class Barnsley Youth Choir, and there’s more still to come with their ‘unplugged’ concert at St Mary’s Church on Saturday December 21.
Also still to come this Christmastime is Tipi Christmas in the town centre – with its warm, festive atmosphere you can enjoy food, drink, and entertainment for all ages.
Whether you prefer mulled wine or hot chocolate, there’s something for everyone as you relax by the open fire and soak up the atmosphere.
For families, Cannon Hall Museum offers two standout events. The 12 Days of Christmas Trail takes visitors on a festive journey through the museum grounds, bringing the classic carol to life.
While there, don’t miss A Very Victorian Christmas, which offers a fascinating glimpse into how the Victorians celebrated the season.
It’s the perfect opportunity to enjoy time with loved ones while exploring traditions that shaped our town’s Christmases.
Elsecar Heritage Centre is also hosting its own festive attractions, including a Christmas Trail.
This scenic outdoor walk is a wonderful way to explore the heritage centre while soaking up the seasonal beauty.
And on Sunday, the centre will hold its Outdoor Christmas Market, offering a delightful range of food, gifts, and festive treats. It’s a fantastic chance to support local businesses and find those last-minute Christmas surprises.
For something a little different, why not visit Wentworth Castle Gardens for their woolly jumper walk?
It’s the perfect excuse to wrap up warm, enjoy a stroll through historic grounds, and, if you’re lucky, spot some wildlife among the beautiful surroundings.
There’s also a number of Grimethorpe Colliery Band concerts taking place between now and Christmas including at the Dearne Playhouse tomorrow and Emmanuel Church on Friday December 20.
If there are tickets still available, the iconic band are well worth a watch and will certainly get you in the festive spirit.
It’s clear that Barnsley is embracing the season in style, and it’s been wonderful to see people of all ages enjoying the festivities.
If you can, I encourage everyone to take part in the events still to come right on our doorstep.
This is a time to come together to support our local businesses, make lasting memories with friends and family, spread the spirit of kindness and generosity that defines our town.
I very much hope you have a happy and healthy Christmas.
