The café bar at Barnsley Civic has closed, after the organisation that ran it decided not to renew its lease.

Barnsley Premier Leisure, which also runs the town's Metrodome and a range of sports and leisure facilities, was leasing the cafe at The Civic on Hanson Street.

Helen Ball, chief executive at The Civic, said: "Unfortunately, Barnsley Premier Leisure decided not to enter into renewal terms with Barnsley Civic Enterprise Trust Ltd to run the onsite cafe.

"We are now reviewing our position and considering the next steps we wish to take before offering the opportunity to the market again."

She added: "Both organisations have enjoyed working together and will seek to do so through alternative ventures in the future."

A spokesman for BPL, which is a not-for-profit social enterprise and registered charity, said: "The lease was up for renewal and The Civic put it out for tender to all interested parties. The terms and conditions were not agreeable for BPL moving forward so it decided not to renew."

The licensed cafe served breakfast and was a favoured lunch venue for town centre workers who used its outside tables in good weather.

Besides selling sandwiches, salads, snacks and cakes through the day, it also opened for selected evening events at The Civic.
