Darrell Clarke feels Barnsley’s performances have been worthy of more than 36 points at the mid-point of the League One campaign but that his side are ‘building up to a strong second half of the season’.
The Reds are currently seventh, a point and a place outside the play-offs.
Clarke told the Chronicle: “I feel we should be on more points, based on performances, but it’s a results business. We are building up to a strong second half of the season which we need. I want everybody to get behind that.”
The Reds had a dramatic Christmas week. They were thrashed 4-0 at home to Leyton Orient on December 21 before winning at Bolton and Peterborough in their next two games.
Clarke said: “My past experience helped me on that. I was never going to overreact. I brought the boys in the next day (after Orient) because the performance wasn’t acceptable.
“But I understood there were a lot of good performances before then that should have been more rewarded.
“My experience told me to calm everybody down, control the environment in the club and make sure everyone was positive. That has worked but there is still a lot of work to be done.”
