Darrell Clarke is ‘sure the knives were out’ at half-time on Boxing Day but was delighted with his Barnsley team’s comeback to win 2-1 at Bolton Wanderers.

The Reds, who had been beaten 4-0 at home to Leyton Orient on Saturday, trailed at the break but Davis Keillor-Dunn and Adam Phillips scored late on to win it.

Clarke told the Chronicle: “We’ve come in for a lot of criticism, and rightly so. The performance against Leyton Orient wasn’t acceptable and we weren’t on a great run of results albeit some of the performances were good.

“It’s nice to send the fans home happy.

“I am delighted with the character. Going a goal down at half-time, I am sure the knives were out.”

Clarke praised match-winner Phillips, saying: “He’s shown quality for a consistent period of time and knows what the club is all about. Getting more of those in our team serves us well.”
