WHILE everyone loves a good pub quiz one pub has been using its weekly general knowledge test to support a good cause - and have now donated more than £4,000 to Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.
The idea started around four years back when quizmasters at the Crown Inn, in Wath, decided to ask for charitable donations at the end of each quiz night.
At first they only raised a few hundred pounds over the course of a year, but as time’s gone on the appeal has grown bigger and more popular, and over the course of 2024 they managed to collect £4,219 for the South Yorkshire-based charity.
One of the organisers, Billy Grant, told the Chronicle: “I’ve always wanted to do something for Bluebell Wood.
“For me a children’s hospice is a cause that should always be supported and funded.
“This year we went over to the site to give out some selection boxes and look around the grounds - I think that’s really helped people get on board.
“It’s just taken off.”
The simple initiative has proven incredibly successful, with the team receiving some larger donations of up to £1,000 - though Billy admits that he’s not concerned how much people donate, just that they show some kind of support.
“Personally I’m just dead chuffed with it,” he added.
“It doesn’t matter if you put in one pound or a thousand, it all matters.
“There’s no discrimination about the amounts, if you’ve put a pound in then it’s absolutely fantastic.”
