A NEW Pentecostal church will open in Barnsley next weekend.
Pastor Richard Cairnes moved to the town in May with his wife Klaudia and four children having lived in Corby.
In 2022, Klaudia picked up a book which told the story of James Hudson Taylor, a missionary who grew up in Barnsley in the 19th century.
Hudson Taylor was one of the first Christian missionaries to be sent to China and it’s his story which inspired the couple to set up in the town and open the venue on Spark Lane, Mapplewell.
It will become one of 550 Elim Pentecostal venues in the UK when it opens its doors next Saturday.
Richard told the Chronicle: “It was like our hearts were already in Barnsley.
“I want the church to be a place for real people with real stories.
“We’ve really enjoyed settling in Barnsley and its people are the most friendly we’ve ever come across.”
Richard recovered from a drug and alcohol addiction through his Christian faith and hopes to work with people who have struggled with similar issues and tackle homelessness.
“The church is called ‘inside-out church’ and follows the values of authenticity, audaciousness and availability,” he added.
“It will be family-friendly and to serve the needs of the local community.
“We are hosting a variety of events including a Christmas comedy night on December 12 at 7pm and a carol service on December 14.”
