A CONVICTED drug trafficker has been ordered to pay back a whopping £95,000 he made from criminal activities.
Jack Downend, of Hill End Close, was jailed in June 2023 for 13 years after being convicted of drug trafficking offences.
He is one of many criminals being ordered to pay money back into the Criminal Justice System by South Yorkshire Police’s Asset Recovery team, who in October ensure £120,000 will be repaid.
Part of the police’s Economic Crime Unit (ECU) work is to ensure that those who have committed crimes and been brought before the court pay back to the communities they have negatively impacted.
Officers from this unit looked at how 23-year-old Downend had benefited from his illegal activity, calculating an amount, and then looked at what he had available to pay back into the system.
This includes money available in the bank, as well as assets such as property, vehicles, and luxury clothing.
was found to have a financial benefit of £95,000 from illegal activity. On October 7, he was ordered to pay £95,000 in three months.
Laura Hough, head of economic Crime said: “This process is helped by intelligence submitted by the public.
“We can’t do our work without the help of our communities.
“This information helps us gain a better understanding of how much these individuals have benefited from their life of criminality.
“Have you noticed someone in your community who doesn’t have a job or has no explanation as to why they have a second car or why they are suddenly wearing designer clothing?
“They may be gaining this money illegally.
“If you see something that is not quite right, we are urging you to report it to us, or through Crimestoppers if you don’t want to talk to us directly and stay anonymous.”
