WOMBWELL Town won two high-scoring cup ties this week but are looking forward to getting back to hunting first place in NCEL Division One.

They won 3-2 at home to Handsworth, who play a league above them, in the FA Vase first round on Saturday.

Owen Sykes and Jordan Kershaw netted within minutes of each other midway through the first half but the visitors came back to 2-2.

Nicholas Guest won it with an 84th-minute penalty.

Manager Karl Rose said: “It was a good win and a proper cup tie.

“We started like a house on fire and were disappointed to be only 2-0 up.

“They scored on the stroke of half-time then they were very good in the second half. We had a couple of injuries.

“Going into the last 15 minutes, we rallied and came back into it.

“We got a controversial penalty. It was an off the ball incident, their lad pulled our lad to the floor by the neck.

“The linesman was brave and gave it. Their lad got sinbinned at that point then one of our lads picked up two yellows.

“They had one disallowed in the 94th minute for offside.

“Handsworth will be upset but we’re delighted.

“It was one hell of a game and anyone who went got their money’s worth across 100 minutes.”

The competition features clubs from tiers five and six in the non-league system, with the final at Wembley.

Town had won two qualifying games to reach the first round. They have been drawn away at Ashville in the Wirral on the weekend of November 9/10 in the second round.

Rose said: “It’s our FA cup. It brings money into the club for winning.

“The prize money for the last one was £825 and we got a big gate as well.

“Winning breeds winning. We want to go as far as we can, keep enjoying each round and see where it takes us.

“It’s the first time we’ve entered and we’ve already won three games.

“You can test yourselves against all the clubs in the country at our level and the level above.”

Town then won 5-2 at home to Cudworth club Elite AFC in the Sheffield Senior Cup on Tuesday.

They went 4-0 up on 33 minutes, conceded twice then scored again.

Eddie Agnew hit a hat-trick with Kane Reece and Jordan Kershaw also on target. Elite’s scorers were Cole Patrick and Dec Richards.

Town are currently third in NCEL Division One, nine points off leaders Horbury with three games in hand.

One side goes up automatically.

Rose said: “Cups are great and all well and good. But we have to pack that up now. Horbury are nine points clear.

“We have three games in hand but we have to win them and get back in the fight. Games will come thick and fast.”
