GEORGE Morgan celebrated his 95th birthday on Tuesday by doing what he loves most - playing sport with his friends.
There can’t be many people of George’s age who still play sport on a regular basis and he’s showing absolutely no signs of stopping just yet.
The Athersley South man has picked up the sport of new-age kurling over the last year and he admits it’s what he lives for now.
He told the Chronicle: “It’s the best game that anybody could have.
“I love it and I look forward to it.
“I live for it.
“I go bowling on a Monday, I go kurling on a Tuesday, I go shopping on a Wednesday, bowling on a Thursday, bowling on a Friday.
“I have my weekends for myself.
“I just love it and couldn’t wish for anything else.”
George is part of the new-age kurling group which runs on Tuesdays from 10am to 12pm at Dorothy Hyman Sports Centre in Cudworth.
And the friends he’s made at the group and now friends for life.
“I couldn’t have any better friends than what I’ve got here,” he said.
“This is a special day.”
The group is run by Mac McKechnie - the man who introduced walking cricket to the town.
He says that the group isn’t just about keeping physically fit - it’s about keeping mentally well, too.
“The socialising aspect of this is just as important as the kurling itself,” he said.
“It’s around alleviating isolation in the community for older people.
“We also want to maintain people’s mental wellbeing.
“Over the pandemic particularly people were really struggling.
“This is just another way of trying to provide something for people.”
Another group also takes place at Hoyland Leisure Centre on Thursdays from 10am to 12pm.
