HOYLANDSWAINE’S Lucy Clough is running 100km this week to raise money for Barnsley Youth Choir.

The 24-year-old joined the group in 2009 and hasn’t looked back.

She’s due to travel to South Africa later this month with other members but, as the choir is a charity, they need to fundraise to get there.

The choir offers subsidised travel for those who wish to attend - and Lucy is hoping her challenge will ensure even more people are able to go.

She told the Chronicle: “A big thing with the youth choir is making sure that everyone and anyone can get involved.

“I’ve been in the choir since 2009 only leaving shortly when I went to university but I’m back now.

“I’m one of the oldest members now so I’m looking at all the younger ones having so much fun thinking ‘that’s what I was like’.

“I really enjoy it.”

Lucy braved the wet weather on Monday to run her first 20km of the week - and she’s already raised £700 for the choir.

“It averages out at about 15km a day but I’m trying to get more done earlier on in the week,” she added.

“It’s quite hard - it was awful on Monday because there was torrential rain.

“People were driving past me probably thinking ‘what the hell is she doing?’

“I’ve always been a runner but I’ve never done anything like this before.

“I keep having to up the goal - it’s now at £750 but I’ve raised £700 so I’ll probably raise it again.

“A few other members from the youth choir are going to do the last bit of the challenge with me on Sunday which will be nice.”
