Barnsley came from behind twice to salvage a 2-2 draw at home to Wycombe Wanderers on Tuesday night.

After a very poor first half from both sides, Wycombe took the lead within seconds of the re-start but substitute Stephen Humphrys levelled before the hour. Wycombe scored again on 85 minutes but Marc Roberts levelled on 89 for the Reds who are now seventh with 15 points from nine games.

Barnsley did not play particularly well but showed good character to level quickly twice.

Darrell Clarke made three changes from the side that drew with Stockport County on Saturday.

Top-scorer Adam Phillips dropped out of the squad, thought to be due to injury, with Corey O’Keeffe and Stephen Humphrys benched. In came Donovan Pines, Sam Cosgrove and Kyran Lofthouse, who started a Reds league game at home for the first time.

The Reds played a 4-4-2 with Mael de Gevigney and Josh Earl – usually centre-backs – the full-backs while Barry Cotter and Lofthouse, usually wing-backs, were on the wings while Cosgrove was partnered up front by Davis Keillor-Dunn.

Barnsley started brightly, with Cosgrove having a goal ruled out for offside in the third minute after Lofthouse’s shot deflected to him. Cosgrove then cushioned a Cotter pass to Keillor-Dunn whose 20-yard shot was tipped wide of the bottom right corner by the goalkeeper.

The first half then became an awful spectacle, with both sides struggling to keep hold of the ball while there were regular aimless long passes and set pieces which lacked quality.

Wycombe’s Caleb Taylor headed over after a corner on the left was played short then the cross was flicked on but, after that moment in the 16th minute, nothing of note happened in the remainder of a drab first half.

Wycombe took the lead with their first shot on target seconds into the second half, when Kieran Sadlier’s cross from the left was volleyed at the back post by Bez Lubala and the low effort bounced in off the left post.

Barnsley responded well with Luca Connell’s 25-yard volley hitting the right post then Mael de Gevigney being denied a penalty after a good burst into the right of the box from halfway.

Sadlier then cut in from the left and saw a 15-yard shot easily held by Gaga Slonina before, at the other end, Cosgrove headed a tough chance well over from Cotter’s cross.

Clarke brought on Humphrys and Fabio Jalo who combined within minutes for the leveller. Jalo swapped smart passes with Luca Connell then slipped in Humphrys on the left of the box whose 15-yard shot found the bottom right corner.

Not much happened until, in the final ten minutes, Jalo’s deflected effort from the edge of the box went just wide of the top left corner.

The visitors retook the lead when, after Richard Kone easily beat Cotter on the left, Taylor hit the bar from close range then Kone saw an effort blocked by Earl and Slonina saved from Joe Low but Kone finally tapped in.

Barnsley again responded well and, after a Humphrys' header from a corner cross was tipped over, they levelled again. Substitute Josh Benson saw a header from a right-wing corner well saved but Roberts tapped in from a few yards out.

Barnsley had a succession of corners at the end but could not find a winner.

No Adam Phillips in the Barnsley squad. Stephen Humphrys and Corey O'Keeffe drop to bench. Kyran Lofthouse makes his first home league start with Donovan Pines and Sam Cosgrove coming in.
  • 6:57pm
This will be a second evening home league game in four days for Barnsley, following Saturday’s 1-1 draw home to Stockport County, who levelled in injury-time.
  • 6:59pm
The Reds are sixth with 14 points, a place and a point clear of Wycombe who have played a game fewer.
  • 7:06pm
I'm guessing Earl at left wing-back with Lofthouse and DKD behind Cosgrove. Can't really think what else unless they go four centre-backs in a back four or something....
  • 7:09pm
The Chairboys lost their first two league games of the season – to current top two Wrexham and Birmingham – but then beat Rotherham 2-0, drew 2-2 at Blackpool and won 2-1 over all three of Northampton, Cambridge and Bristol Rovers in their last three games, netting a 96th-minute winner on Saturday. They are unbeaten in five, with four wins.
  • 7:11pm
Head coach Darrell Clarke said: “People get too bogged down by names and history in this league. Wycombe have a very competitive squad. We are very respectful of them. They have been a strong unit over the years and it’s a very very well-run club.
  • 7:13pm
“They have had good performances and results recently. But I believe, if we get our performance right, we’re more than a match for anyone.”
  • 7:15pm
Wycombe were known for being very direct and physical under previous boss Gareth Ainsworth, who took them to the Championship, but they are less extreme under his replacement Matt Bloomfield. Clarke said: “They mix it up. Gareth did an amazing job there, getting them to where they did. They have always been difficult to play against and a successful team.”
  • 7:17pm
Clarke was disappointed with his team’s performance on Saturday and wants to give the fans something better tonight. He said: “I want to see a reaction from my players after Saturday and a positive, forward-thinking performance.
  • 7:24pm
“The fans have been superb. We have to get our fans going. We started the game really well other night. I get the frustration because we want to be in division higher. You will always get nights where the reaction is frustration. I understand. It’s the nature of the beast. Players and us as staff need to give the fans a performance.”
  • 7:31pm
Wycombe lost 1-0 at Oakwell last November due to Sam Cosgrove’s injury-time goal which saw him bump into goalkeeper Max Stryjek who dropped the ball for the striker to tap into the empty net.
  • 7:33pm
The Reds then won 4-2 at Adams Park in March, having been behind twice, thanks to goals by Cosgrove, Donovan Pines, Corey O’Keeffe and Conor Grant.
  • 7:38pm
Barnsley have won seven of their 12 meetings with the Chairboys, including the last three, and only lost twice.
  • 7:40pm
Former Barnsley man Josh Scowen remains a regular in Wycombe’s midfield. He was part of Barnsley's promotion winning side in 2016 along with Marc Roberts and Conor Hourihane who have returned to the Reds for this season
  • 7:46pm

  • 8:17pm
Barnsley are playing four centre-backs across the back four and two wing backs on the wings. They started brightly but now look stodgy. Wycombe no better though so far

  • 8:21pm
A decent period of possession for the Reds but all near halfway then Pines booms the ball down the pitch to no one
  • 8:24pm
Wycombe winning the midfield war so far, just. They have three battlers in there in ex-Red Scowen, Tyreeq Bakinson and Aaron Morley who are overpowering Craig and Connell currently
