A round-up of some Barnsley FC related stories coming out of the weekend.

SLONINA: WE NEED TO DO BETTER

Gabriel Slonina played down his own individual performance after conceding an injury-time equaliser against Stockport County on Saturday night.

The US international goalkeeper produced easily his best home performance in the league so far but was beaten by a deflected shot in the 91st minute.

The 20-year-old Chelsea loanee told the Chronicle: “It can be a cruel game but we need to do better at finding a way to see these games out. It’s obviously a difficult one, winning the entire game then conceding that goal. But we can’t do anything but focus on Tuesday and get the win there. It’s definitely frustrating. We need to be better at keeping control of the game.

“It was a good outing from the fans. They have supported us all season and hopefully we can start giving them wins at home.”

Slonina made some good saves against Stockport, including an impressive double stop on the stroke of half-time. He said: “It doesn’t matter. It would only matter if we had a clean sheet and took three points. It doesn’t matter what I do individually if we’re not getting the wins where we should.”

WILKINSON CAPTAINS ENGLAND UNDER 16S TO 3-0 WIN

BARNSLEY youngster Oliver Wilkinson captained Barnsley under 16s in their 3-0 win over Ukraine.

The 15-year-old defender, who became the Reds’ youngest ever starter earlier this season in the EFL Trophy against Manchester United under 21s, is a regular youth international.

The Young Lions then beat Israel 2-1 on Sunday, with Wilkinson rested, then are due to play against France on Tuesday.

WOMEN OFF BOTTOM BUT LOSE 5-0 IN CUP

BARNSLEY FC women’s difficult start to the season continued this week.

They lost 5-0 in the National League Cup at home to Stoke City on Sunday.

The Reds had drawn 1-1 at Huddersfield Town last Thursday evening in the National League Division One North.

They fell behind then Freya Walton headed in a leveller on 62 minutes.

They remain winless, with three points from their first five games, but the point took them off the bottom of the table.

Barnsley now host Stockport County from 2pm on Sunday in a league match.

MIXED WEEKEND FOR REDS LOANEES

Many of Barnsley’s loaned-out players were in action over the weekend.

Kacper Lopata played the full game for Ross County as they conceded a 96th-minute leveller in a 1-1 draw at Hearts in the SPL.

Jack Shepherd played all of Bradford City’s 2-1 loss at Harrogate Town in League Two.

Rogan Ravenhill was praised for some impressive saves as Matlock drew 0-0 at Whitby in the Northern Premier League.

Josiah Dyer came off the bench and played a part in Gainsborough’s winner as they triumphed at 2-1 Darlington in the FA Cup.

TWO HOME GAMES FOR U21S

Barnsley under 21s are due to host Crewe Alexandra from 2pm on Friday on the first team pitch.

They are also due to play at home to Peterborough United on Tuesday.

The under 18s are due to host Bradford City from 11am on Saturday.
