BARNSLEY RUFC Ladies began their season with defeat but the men got their first win of the campaign at the second attempt.

The women’s team lost 29-24 at home to West Park Leeds in Championship One North – the second tier in England.

They now visit Buckingham Swans on Sunday.

The men secured their first win of the season with a 16-5 win over Thirsk in Yorkshire Division Three. They now visit Rotherham Phoenix on Saturday.

Wath made it two wins from two since promotion to Yorkshire One with a 21-7 home victory against Wensleydale.

Anthony Davies scored his first try for Wath and Sean Hopper also touched down, with Jack Whitlam adding a conversion and three penalties. Wath now visit West Leeds on Saturday.

Dearne Valley won 20-19 at Maltby in Yorkshire Division Four.

Sam Oxley, Jack Duggan and Arron Kite touched down with Stephen Shaw kicking a penalty and a conversion.

Dearne now host Stocksbridge on Saturday and Wortley host Maltby.
