BIN collections have been missed yet again in Hoyland Common - prompting a local councillor to call for more to be done to support residents.

Locals have been complaining to Barnsley Council about missed bin collections with many streets left with overflowing waste for a number of weeks.

Coun David White, who represents the Rockingham ward, told the Chronicle: “Yet again we are having borough-wide issues with bin waste collection.

“It’s a relatively basic service that should run like clockwork.

“The occasional error or issue with parked cars blocking access everyone can understand.

“But when this runs into weeks and weeks without collection it becomes a major issue.

“Not just public health, but people’s mental health too.

“Most residents do their very best to recycle their waste, but when there simply isn’t anywhere to deposit household rubbish, what options do people have, especially the elderly and vulnerable.

“It’s a core service and should be grasped hold of once and for all please.”

He claims that some bins haven’t been emptied for four weeks, with some residents having to tackle a rat issue themselves.

Coun James Higginbottom, cabinet spokesperson for environment and highways, said: “Unfortunately, some bin collections were missed in Hoyland Common last Friday, due to a vehicle breakdown.

“Our crews recovered these missed collections on Monday.

“Any information on collections or reports of missed bins can be found on our website.”
