COUNTLESS people enjoyed the racing spectacle in the town centre today as they welcomed Tour of Britain’s cyclists into Barnsley.
The event has been in the works for months, with the council and South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) working together to organise the race, which saw some of the world’s best rush through the streets of the county.
Cyclists crossed the finish line on County Way in the town centre, where they were greeted by hundreds of cheering fans who turned out to see the events of the day unfold.
Next to the finish line there was a dedicated ‘fan zone’ that featured music, live commentary a big screen to watch the event unfold and a selection of stalls.
Coun Caroline Makinson, deputy leader of Barnsley Council, said: “It’s been an incredible day.
“For us to host such world-class cycling talent in our borough for a spectacle of professional cycling has been a massive honour and has allowed us to showcase the best of Barnsley to a global audience.
“It’s given us a fantastic opportunity to promote cycling in the borough and we hope people of all ages have been inspired to take up cycling whether it’s for work, leisure or health and wellbeing.
“Our Barnsley Bike Works team have certainly been busy in the last few weeks and we hope that continues long after today.
“A lot of hard work has gone into the preparation for hosting the race, so a massive thank you must go to all of our staff who have played their part in such a momentous occasion.
“So many individuals and community groups have thrown themselves into supporting the race too.
“It was amazing to see, and we thank everyone involved for their efforts in making the day so memorable.”
