WORSBROUGH Bridge pulled out of their game Club Thorne Colliery after 95 minutes following an alleged racist comment towards their captain.

The incident is currently being investigated by the Northern Counties East League.

Bridge posted on social media: “Stoppage in play due to an alleged racist comment made to the Briggers captain.

#NoPlaceForRacism”

Captain Juninho Blake added: “Crazy how stuff like this takes place on the pitch at any level, especially with what’s going off in the country. Big love to everyone at Worsbrough who stood by me and the odd couple of players from Thorne who wasn’t scared to come forward.”

A league statement read: “We are aware of an alleged incident of racism which led to the abandonment of Saturday’s NCEL Division One match between Club Thorne Colliery and Worsbrough Bridge Athletic.

“There is no place for any kind of discriminatory behaviour, not just in football but anywhere in society.

“The matter is currently being investigated by the County FA in conjunction with ourselves, both teams and the match officials.

“Until this investigation is completed the League can make no further comment.”

Club chairman Mark Booth added: “We have provided relevant witness statements to the West Riding CFA and they will be reviewing and making a decision on Friday this week and at this stage I will be happy to comment further if needed. The only thing I will say is that as a club we and I as chairman fully support the stance made by the management team to withdraw from the game, there is no place for racism in football.”
